(1 July 2022) African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies has launched a new project “Strengthening Civil Society Capacity to Reclaim Civic Space in Transition of Sudan”, funded by The United Nations Democracy Fund. The project seeks to support civil society to strengthen structures and enhance its capacity to reclaim civic space amidst the current situation. This will be achieved through i) an increased understanding of existing barriers; and ii) evidence-based advocacy for better protections and respect of civic space in Sudan.
The project envisages the following outcomes:
Outcome 1: Increased capacity of Sudanese Civil Society to safely monitor and document restrictions on free expression, assembly and association,
Outcome 2: Increased support to CSO advocacy efforts for reforms securing an open civic space.
To support the civil society advocacy efforts, ACJPS shall conduct capacity building activities in monitoring, documentation and advocacy as well as in strategic litigation. The voices and efforts of Sudanese and other non-state actors to protest and demand respect for human rights should be reinforced by a vibrant civil society. These activities will help ensuring the availability of information on the situation of civic space in at least five states (Khartoum, Blue Nile, Kordofan, Darfur and East Sudan) as well as guaranteeing victims of human rights violations to have access to expert legal services.
The project commences on 1 July 2022 and it will end on 30 June 2024.
