(30 July 2014) The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS), together with 25 Sudanese, regional and international organisations, has sent a letter to permanent representatives of member and observer states of the UN Human Rights Council urging them to ensure that the serious and widespread violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in the country are addressed appropriately.
Specifically, the letter calls on delegates to ensure that the human rights crisis in Sudan is addressed under the Council’s agenda item 4, concerning “Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention” during its upcoming 27th session in September. It calls for the Council’s special procedure mandate on Sudan to be strengthened by establishing a Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Sudan with a mandate to monitor and publicly report on violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in all parts of the country.
You can read the letter, which includes briefing on the human rights situation in Sudan since September 2013, here.
