ACJPS Announces New Executive Director

(7 October 2015) ACJPS is pleased to announce the arrival of its new Executive Director, Mr. Mossaad Mohamed Ali.

Mossaad Mohamed Ali is a human rights lawyer and conflict resolution specialist. He previously served as Director of the Amel Centre for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in South Darfur, Sudan, which provided legal aid, medical treatment and psycho-social support to victims and individuals at risk of torture and sexual violence. Under his leadership the organization received a human rights award from the American Federation of Teachers (USA) in 2006. He was formerly a lawyer in private practice working to support victims and individuals at risk of human rights violations in Darfur.

For over fifteen years, Mossaad has been an outspoken and courageous critic of violations of international human rights and humanitarian law throughout Sudan. He has led advocacy efforts to promote peace and justice for the people of Sudan domestically and internationally including with international donors and decision makers at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, UN Human Rights Council and African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights. In 2006 he was awarded the Olof Palme Human Rights and Peace Prize, for being an “outspoken and courageous critic of crimes against human rights”. He shared the prize with the former UN Secretary General, Kofi Anan.

Mossaad holds an L.L.B Degree in Law from Cairo University in Khartoum (Alnilien) Sudan, a Masters Degree in International Human Rights Law from Lund University, Sweden and a Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Malmo University, Sweden.

Mossaad will lead the organisation with the support of the ACJPS international Board of Directors comprised of eight Sudanese and internationally renowned human rights advocates.

“The ACJPS Board of Directors is confident that Mossaad will help ensure ACJPS remains at the cutting edge of high quality research, litigation and advocacy to improve the human rights situation in Sudan”, said Jehanne Henry, ACJPS Board Secretary. “He is equipped with the insight, experiences and proven track record needed to ensure ACJPS continues to shine a light on the grave violations of rights that might otherwise go unreported.”
