EMPLOYMENT WITH ACJPS- EDITING AND TRANSLATION CONSULTANT

  1. Background

The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) is a non-profit, non- governmental organization working to monitor and promote respect for human rights and legal reform in Sudan. ACJPS is dedicated to creating a Sudan committed to all human rights, the rule of law and peace, in which the rights and freedoms of the individual are honored and where all persons and groups are granted their rights to non-discrimination, equality and justice.

ACJPS is seeking a consultant to edit and translate documents produced/published by the Centre under a project funded by DT Global entitled “Increasing the availability and visibility of evidence-based information of human rights violations in Darfur, Sudan since 15 April 2023”. The project was developed to increase the availability and visibility of evidence-based information of human rights violations in Darfur from 15 April 2023. In this regard, several documents published by ACJPS under this project including press releases, blogs, open letters, oral statements and human rights reports among others will be edited and translated from English to Arabic or vice versa to ensure maximum reach to the target audience including those in the diaspora.

II. Description of assignment/task

Under the supervision of the ACJPS Director Monitoring and Documentation, the consultant will be requested to deliver the following:

  • Produce 100% accurate translation of various documents including press releases, blogs, human rights reports, open letters, oral statements etc as assigned by ACJPS;
  • Use the appropriate terminology considering the style and nuances of the original text;
  • Quality check and proofreading of translation ensuring no typographical errors in the final text;
  • Ensure timely delivery of translated materials;
  • Make necessary corrections or changes required by ACJPS or its donor and re-submit corrected text within the agreed timeframe;
  • Ensure high quality and accuracy of the entire document before submission;
  • Deliver the translated documents as per the plan developed by the of the Director Monitoring and Documentation, as per each specific assignment.

III. Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights:

The consultant may not use, reproduce or otherwise disseminate or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate such works without prior consent from the ACJPS.

IV. Confidentiality

The consultant is responsible to maintain confidentiality of ACJPS’ documents that is shared with her/him during the assignment and must not take reference of those documents and information in any other task. The consultant must also ensure the confidentiality of beneficiaries at all times.

V. Timing and deliverables

The assignment is expected to take 10 weeks starting from 23rd October to 31st December 2023. This period includes the contracting, consultations/meeting with project team, translation and submission of translated documents. It also includes weekends.

The consultant is expected to deliver the following:

  • Inception report detailing the Consultants’ understanding of the terms of reference.
  • Draft edited and translated documents.
  • Final copies of edited and translated documents.
  • Consultancy fees

The consultant will be paid a competitive fee.

VII.     Reporting

The consultant will work closely with and report to the Director, Monitoring and Documentation or Legal Program Director depending upon the nature of the document to be translated. However, Human Resource and Senior Program Officer will provide the oversight to the Retainer’s work.

VIII.   Qualifications:

  • The service provider should have minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in editing and translation.
  • Master’s degree in Literature is highly preferable;
  • Have solid prior experience of translating human rights documents from English to Arabic and Arabic to English;
  • Demonstrable experience of producing high-quality, credible reports in English and Arabic.
  • Prior experience working in the human rights sector.
  • Membership to a Professional Translators Association will be considered an asset;

X. Submission of proposals

Interested consultants should submit:

  • A proposal and a letter of availability and an explanation of how their professional experience matches the skills and qualifications listed. The proposal should demonstrate sound knowledge, technical skills and capability as required by the nature of the work and understanding of the requisite tasks set forth in the terms of reference;
  • Eligible firms should submit their organisation profile, and CVs of Consultant;
  • At least two positive references/recommendations from past employers must be submitted.
